140 BPM is the upper half of allegro and the most common ceiling for a practice ramp that started at 80. It is also the clearest example anywhere of a tempo being two tempos at once: trap and dubstep are both written and counted at 140, and both are heard at 70, because the backbeat lands every other bar's worth of the fast count. How to practise at 140 BPM

  1. Press Start. A beat is 429 milliseconds, and a bar of 4/4 is 1.71 seconds.
  2. To feel the half-time version, set beats per bar to 2 while it runs. The clicks do not move; the accent does, and the same tempo now reads as 70.
  3. As a ramp target, set start 80, step 4, every 8 bars, stop at 140. That is fifteen steps across sixteen tempos, a little under five minutes of continuous playing.
  4. Eighths at 140 are 280 a minute. If a passage is in eighths, click them rather than the beat - at this speed the beat alone leaves too much room between checkpoints.

One tempo, two feels

140 BPM is where the half-time trick is most visible. Trap and dubstep are both notated and sequenced at around 140, with hi-hats running at that rate or faster, but the snare lands only twice in the space where a straightforward 140 track would put four — so the body hears a backbeat at 70 while the top of the kit is moving at 140. The tempo has not changed. The accent pattern has.

You can hear the whole effect on this page with one control. Start the metronome at 140 with the accent on and beats per bar at 4, and it reads as a quick four. Change beats per bar to 2 without stopping it: not one click moves, but the accented beat now arrives every 857 milliseconds instead of every 1.71 seconds, and the same stream of clicks reads as a slower, heavier pulse with a subdivision on top. That is the difference between a tempo and a feel, demonstrated with a checkbox.

The same relationship makes 70 BPM the natural practice tempo for anything written at 140: exactly half, so nothing about the subdivision has to be re-learned on the way up.

Where the ramp usually ends

140 is the most common stopping point for a practice ramp, and not by accident. A great deal of repertoire is marked somewhere between 120 and 152, which is the fast end of allegro, and 140 sits in the middle of that. A ramp from 80 to 140 in steps of 4 is fifteen steps across sixteen tempos; at eight bars a tempo, and bars that shorten from 3 seconds at the bottom to 1.7 at the top, that is a little under five minutes of unbroken playing — short enough to do daily and long enough that the top of it is a real test.

What the trainer is really buying you is the removal of a decision. Left to choose tempos by hand, most players jump in tens, stop to type a number, lose the thread, and end up playing the passage far fewer times than they think. A ramp that climbs on its own keeps the instrument in your hands, and the number on the screen becomes information rather than a task.

FAQ

Is 140 BPM fast?
It is well into allegro, whose band runs 120 to 156, so by the markings it is properly fast without being at the top of the range. Whether it feels fast depends entirely on what is happening underneath: 140 with a half-time backbeat feels like 70, and 140 with sixteenth-note hi-hats feels like a great deal more.
Why is trap written at 140 when it sounds slow?
Because the snare marks a backbeat at half that rate while the hi-hats run at 140 or double it. Your sense of tempo follows the backbeat, so the track feels like 70, but everything is counted, sequenced and swung at 140. Set this metronome to 140 with beats per bar at 2 and you are hearing the same arrangement of accents.
What is the ideal step size for a tempo ramp?
Small enough that you cannot feel the change happen. Four BPM works well through this region: from 140 to 144 the beat shortens by 12 milliseconds, which nobody notices consciously. What matters more than the step is the rule about failure — if a rung produces mistakes, the tempo you actually have is the last clean one, and the ramp should go back down rather than through.
