How to practise at 180 BPM

  1. Press Start. A beat is 333 milliseconds, and a bar of 4/4 is 1.33 seconds.
  2. For a waltz, set beats per bar to 3. Each bar is exactly one second, which is the whole trick of a Viennese waltz - one bar, one second, sixty bars a minute.
  3. In 4/4, set beats per bar to 2 and count half notes at 90. Above about 170 that is how most players actually hold the bar.
  4. Leave the subdivision off unless the music genuinely needs it. Eighths at 180 are 360 a minute, which is a reference rather than a grid you can play against.

A Viennese waltz, measured in beats instead of bars

Ballroom tempos are quoted in bars a minute rather than beats, which hides how fast some of them are. The Viennese waltz is set at around sixty bars a minute in competition, and a bar of 3/4 has three quarter notes in it — so sixty bars a minute is 180 quarter notes a minute. At that speed one bar takes exactly one second, and dancers do not count 1 2 3 at all; they feel one pulse per bar and let the other two beats fall where they will.

Set beats per bar to 3 on this page and you can hear both readings of the same tick. The accented click arrives once a second and the two unaccented ones fill in behind it. If you count the accents, you are counting bars at 60. If you count every click, you are counting beats at 180. Same clock, and a completely different sense of how fast the music is — which is a good reminder that a BPM number on its own does not tell you how a piece feels.

Where you stop counting beats

There is a rate above which counting every beat stops helping. It varies by player and by idiom, but for most people it is somewhere around 160 to 180: past that, saying or thinking four numbers in 1.33 seconds costs more attention than it returns, and the useful unit becomes the bar. Conductors make the same move — a fast 3/4 is conducted in one, with a single beat per bar, precisely because three separate gestures a second communicate nothing.

The metronome's job changes accordingly. Up here it is not a checkpoint for every note; it is a reference you sample. Play a phrase and confirm you are still with it at the end. If you are not, the useful diagnosis is almost never the last note — it is a rushed offbeat several bars earlier, and finding it means dropping to 90 BPM, which is exactly half this tempo, and playing the same phrase with the subdivision clicking.

Drum and bass, incidentally, lives just below this, generally around 170 to 176, and is another idiom counted in half-time: the breakbeat runs at the full rate while the bass line moves at half of it.

Yes. Presto's band is given as 168 to 200, so 180 sits comfortably inside it. Vivace overlaps from below, closing at 176, and prestissimo does not begin until 200. At these speeds the bands are packed close together and the words overlap heavily, because there is not much room left between very fast and as fast as possible.
