A tuner tells you when one note is right. Interval training is how you learn to hear whether the next note is right — the exact distance between two pitches, named. Press play, listen to two notes, and pick the interval from unison up to the octave. Every pitch is generated on the spot from equal temperament with A4 at 440 Hz, so the intervals you are learning here are the same ones the tuner measures.

How to use the Interval Ear Trainer

  1. Press Play interval. Two notes sound — ascending by default — and nothing plays until you press it.
  2. Name what you heard with the answer buttons. The first answer you give for each question is the one that counts.
  3. Press Replay to hear it again, or Reveal to give up on the current question — a reveal is scored as a miss.
  4. Narrow the interval set while you're learning (start with the 4th, 5th and octave), then switch direction to descending or harmonic once ascending feels easy.

FAQ

Which intervals does it test?
All thirteen from unison to the octave: unison (0 semitones), minor 2nd (1), major 2nd (2), minor 3rd (3), major 3rd (4), perfect 4th (5), tritone (6), perfect 5th (7), minor 6th (8), major 6th (9), minor 7th (10), major 7th (11) and the octave (12). The answer buttons and the notes you hear are both generated from that one table, so they cannot disagree with each other.
What tuning does it use?
Equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz: every pitch is 440 × 2^((n−69)/12) for MIDI note n, the same formula the tuner uses to decide what is sharp or flat. A perfect fifth above A4 is E5 at 659.26 Hz — the equal-tempered fifth, about two cents narrower than a pure 3:2 ratio.
Why does the starting note keep moving?
Because recognizing a note is a different skill from measuring a distance. Each question picks a fresh root between A3 and A4, so the only thing held constant is the interval itself — you have to hear the gap rather than the notes.
Should I train ascending, descending or harmonic?
Ascending first: upward melodic leaps are the easiest to hear and the ones your musical memory is already full of. Descending is a genuinely separate skill and deserves its own practice. Harmonic — both notes at once — is the hardest, because you are judging one blended sound rather than two events.
